3D printing of wax patterns for the Lost Wax process

Are you interested in studying optimisation of the 3D printing process? In that case, this project may be of interest to you.

The lost wax technology is used in our laboratories for research in special materials and to investigate effects of controlled solidification on the structure and properties of metals. We also use it to produce protptypes of various sorts.

3D printing can be a straightforward method to produce wax patterns that are used to make ceramic shells for lost wax castings. However, it is well known that printing wax is difficult because of its low melting point that restricts the printing temperature putting restrictions on printing speed and –strategy.

Further, when the shell is produced using the printed wax pattern, the difference in thermal expansion between the two materials often leads to cracking of the shell. Some of this can be avoided by optimising the heating procedure for wax removal, but still cracking is a common problem.

A solution to this coud be to print wax patterns with an internal structure that allows thermally induced stresses to be relieved internally in the pattern so that the shell is left stress-free during heating.

We would like students to investigate and optimise printing procedures for wax materials in filament printers. This includes optimisation of proces parameters with regard to printing speed accuracy of printed parts and optimisation of surace quality.

We would also like students to develop fill-in structures for solid parts that minimise wax consumption and reduces thermal distortion to a minimum.
