Seasonal heat storages for district heating applications

Seasonal heat storages are essential for district heating systems because they offer flexibility for the system to integrate different fluctuating renewable energy sources. The most promising seasonal heat storage solutions in practice are water pit thermal storage (PTES) and borehole storage (BTES). PTES have been successfully used in district heating plants in Denmark, for example, in Marstal (75,000 m3), Dronningland (60,000 m3), Vojens (200,000 m3) and Gram (120,000 m3). One good example of BTES is the borehole heat storage of 19,000 m3 in Brædstrup solar district heating plant. Long term monitoring of the heat storages shows the need for improvement in storage designs.

The assignment/project could be focused in one or more of the following topics:

1.      Development of models for PTES and BTES for district heating application

2.      Theoretical calculation of the PTES or BTES

3.      Analysis of long term monitoring data of the PTES or BTES heat storage projects in Denmark

4.      Design optimization of the PTES or BTES by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations

5.      Modeling of thermal stratification in PTES

Own ideas in the relevant field are also welcome.
