Research at the interface between chemistry, biology and medicine – the role of metals in biological systems

Metal ions carry out a wide range of essential functions in biological systems. These metals are primarily found in metalloenzymes, which is the main subject of our teaching and research in bioinorganic chemistry – the interface between chemistry, biology and medicine. We offer a wide range of projects, for example:

 

  • Genetic engineering (molecular biology)

  • Recombinant protein expression

  • Fermentation

  • Chromatographic protein purification (HPLC)

  • Synthesis of artificial metalloproteins using anaerobic conditions

  • Metalloproteins involved in neurological diseases

  • Studies of enzymatic reactions and enzymatic assays

  • Characterization of metalloproteins by:

    • Structural studies, e.g. mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography

    • Spectroscopic techniques, e.g. UV-VIS, EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopy

    • Functional studies, e.g. bioelectrochemistry, functional assays

We offer research based projects on all levels, i.e. both bachelor and master projects and also as special courses. Detailed project descriptions and scope are arranged individually.
