The value of monitoring - use of long datasets for modelling of urban drainage systems

Numerical models are widely used to simulate water flows in urban drainage systems. However, such models are seldom calibrated, or the model parameters are estimated based on a limited number of observations.
The water utility in Næstved has collected several year of data (flow and rainfall measurements), and this create an unique opportunity to evaluate the benefits of performing long-term monitoring campaigns. Aspects that could be investigated are: (i) evaluation of seasonal variations in flows, (ii) assessment of spatial variation of rainfall, (iii) uncertainty of collected data.
