How toxic are TiO2 nanoparticles to algae – and why?

TiO2 nanoparticles are being used in an increasing range of products. Sunscreen, paint, water treatment and solar cells are just some of the applications. These particles are produced and sold in many sizes and with different coatings, which gives them different properties. This has been found to change their behaviour – and also their effects on organisms in the environment.

The purpose of this project is to investigate the effects of different types of TiO2 nanoparticles with different sizes, crystalline structure and coatings on green freshwater algae. Possible additional experiments include influence of NOM on particle toxicity, particle interactions with other environmental pollutants and investigations of effect mechanisms.
