Our profile

Addressing the challenges of Industry 4.0 is a major focus area at DTU Mechanical Engineering. 3D-printing, or Additive Manufacturing, is digital by nature and will be an inherent part of the development towards digitization in the manufacturing industry. Moreover, Additive Manufacturing has the potential to enhance the performance of engineering applications by utilizing its inherent design freedom to create complex geometries such as required for conformal cooling. Hence, a variety of industrial applications such as injection molds, hydraulic equipment, and fuel nozzles utilize additively manufactured channels to exchange heat, transport, or accelerate mass. However, these channels show significant form deviations and high surface roughness dependent on the orientation and nominal diameter when made by Selective Laser Melting.  As a consequence, post-processing becomes an essential step in the process-chain to utilize the benefits of additive manufacturing fully. Abrasive Flow Machining represents a promising approach to finish the surface of complex internal features through erosion. This work focusses on the adaption and application of abrasive flow machining for additively manufactured small-scale channels.

Your task

The following fields could be a part of your project – dependent on your background and preferences:

·         Literature review on post-processing of additively manufactured components

·         Development of concepts using abrasive fluid machining

·         Prototyping of new concepts

·         Design, procurement and assembly of a test-rig including fixture

·         Post-processing of artefacts made by SLM

·         Sensitivity analysis of post-processing parameters on resulting channel features using non-destructive testing (CT-scanning)
