Project

Citizen science insights into seatrout feeding biology

Location

DTU Aqua have developed a citizen science platform where anglers can report fishing trips and catches (Fangstjournalen). In return, the anglers get information about fisheries and other benefits. A group of anglers already using the platform agreed in spring 2018 to expand their usual reporting to also include stomach content from seatrout. A year later, in spring 2019, these anglers have reported stomach content from around 150 seatrout.

In this project, the student should first describe the composition of prey that seatrout are feeding on and explore if prey composition relate to fish length and season. Next the student should discuss the findings in relation to other stomach content surveys made by trained researches and finally review the general potential of using citizen science as a tool in fisheries research and specific in relation to exploring feeding biology of fish.
