Deciphering antibiotic resistance gene transfer in microbial communities by next-generation sequencing

Background:
The proliferation of antibiotic resistance worldwide is a serious public health concern. As reported by the World Health Organization, we are now at the brink of a post-antibiotic era, where antibiotic treatment failures will be common. Gene transfer outside clinical settings has played as a crucial role in the global propagation of antibiotic resistance.


Approach:
At DTU Environment, we coupled next-generation sequencing with bioinformatics analysis to assess gene transfer potential in microbial communities of urban wastewater system. Antibiotic resistance genes and their genomic/genetic context will be examined. Results of the project will provide an overview of to what extent urban wastewater system contributes to dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.

You will learn the way of addressing research questions through scientific training (e.g. independent and cooperative study, critical thinking and discussion). And, you will get a tool box of handling basic and advanced bioinformatics analysis, which will be your great benefit if working in other relevant fields.
