A Model-based Evaluation of Nitrogen Removal in Membrane-Aerated Biofilms Reactors

Membrane-aerated biofilm reactors are a new biotechnology . They are excellent candidates to perform autotrophic nitrogen removal from wastewaters, which is both cost- and energy-efficient. Aquasim is a popular modelling program in simulation of wastewater treatment systems, helping us know more details about these biological prosecces. You wiill learn to Operate a counter-diffusion biofilm reactor to realize partial-nitrification N removal process.  You will build and optimize a multi-species nitrifying biofilm model to evaluate the performance under various operational conditions, and study about NOB suppression mechanism. You will run lab-scale biofilm reactors, and monitor the daily performance by NH4+, NO2-, NO3- and DO measurements. Measure N species/profiles within the biofilm (microsensors) .
