Lime based mortars - investigation and quantification of key technological aspects

Lime based mortars have a long tradition in Denmark and are, in addition to its relevance in the maintenance of cultural heritage, being used in modern brickwork structures for their workability benefits and building technological benefits, such as faster drying of the brickwork, crack development in the mortar gap of unevenly settling buildings etc., in comparison to pure cement mortars. Today Denmark produces approx. 100 000 tons lime based mortars per year.

Despite several successful student projects at DTU Civil Engineering on this topic, the majority of the knowledge about lime-based mortars has been developed through experience and passed on in the traditions of the related crafts. The aim of this project and its several topics is to investigate and improve the understanding of these traditional materials by utilizing modern technology and scientific methods.
