Study of duct losses remedies and payback for factory size ductwork

Ductwork layout in factories is often done with focus on the relative position of equipment and minimization of factory footprint. This often leads to ductwork, which is less ideal in terms of flow resistance, often hosting multiple small radius bends, poor manifolds and over-expanded transition pieces. This is also true for ROCKWOOL production plants, where yearly losses can be substantial due to the large amount of process gas and the nonstop production.

The goal of the project is to analyse a current ductwork for magnitude and sources of loss, engineer and test enhancements using CFD, and assess if an implementation is feasible in terms of payback.

The project tasks are as follows:
  1. Conduct a CFD simulation of a current layout.
  2. Identify sources of largest loss through analysis of the CFD results.
  3. Engineer and test enhancements using CFD
  4. Formulate a business case for implementation of remedies.
