The Unknown Side of Gold

In this collection of projects we will study gold (Au). Why? Because Au is very used in nanophotonics, in special plasmonics, but its “nano-” properties are not yet fully understood and it is vey difficult to manipulate it controllably at small scale. Therefore, the study of gold is divided into several sections and it can be tailored for individual purposes. The two main sections are:

A.The study of Au properties at nanoscale
B.Etching Au/dielectric multilayers controllably

You will, in accordance with your interests and teh objective of the project:

1). Fabricate ultra-thin and –smooth Au layers and/or Au/dielectric multilayers (@ DTU Nanolab). You will be trained and use various equipment like lpcvd, sputtering, e-beam evaporation, atomic layer deposition

2). Analyze the properties of the deposited layers (@DTU Nanolab). To do that, you will use X-ray diffraction (XRD), ellipsometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM)

3). Optimize a recipe for controllably etching the Au/dielectric layers
