PlastiSens ApS, a start-up company situated at DTU, is working on a microfluidic sensor system for the detection of antibiotic residues in raw milk. Currently, contaminations in milk can only be detected after it has been collected and delivered to the dairy. This results in an annual loss of approximately DKK 15M in Denmark alone. We want to create a handheld sensor system for detection of contaminants at farm level, thus avoiding the cross-contamination of large volumes of milk. An essential part of this detection system is a disposable lab-on-chip sensor with built in sample pre-treatment, reagent mixer, sensor and waste collection facilities.


Optimization of microfluidic design: Define the best geometry for reliable filling of the channels with milk. Develop mechanism for driving liquid through channel system. COMSOL modelling: Use computer simulations to design the fluidic system and model properties of the electrochemical sensor. Prototyping: Use clean room based techniques, injection molding, and thermal bonding to fabricate iterations and test batches of the final design. Electrochemical sensing: Detect contaminations in real milk samples.
