Project

Valorization and up-cycling of food waste

Publisher

Supervisor

Location

Greater Copenhagen area

Food waste is an heterogeneous mixture of food materials which is discarded at different stages of production, processing, retailing and consumption. Because of the significant amounts of food lost, the topic has gained significant attention in the last years, and upcoming directive implement mandatory separate collection of organic waste in EU by 31 December 2023. Besides waste prevention, significant efforts are currently devoted towards improving the management of food waste, and concepts for recovering high value products through biological treatment are being developed. Initiatives look at both large scale systems as well as small scale units suitable for rural areas.

This project will contribute to the development of innovative ideas for the valorization of food waste. Activities include:

-          Analyze and test the waste biomass for its composition and nutrient/resource content

-          Identify suitable microorganisms to process the biomass under given conditions

-          Develop options for recovering the valuable resources from food waste as well as extracting building blocks to be used for production of high valuable chemicals and resources
