3D data optimization for airport security

Background

Next generation luggage screening will rely on the use of energy dispersive x-ray detectors. These sensors catch photons with energies between 20-160keV and are able to characterize each individual photon for an unprecedented amount of data available for subsequent imaging analysis.

The drawback of these detectors is a significantly higher complexity level in the signal interpretation. The common post-processing steps have to be enhanced and renewed. Even as these methods are being developed we still see artefacts in when the data is transformed into material specific 3 dimensional maps of the luggage. The aim of this project is specifically to analyze and understand the mechanisms of one of these artefacts. If we can successfully construct a model that cause the artefact the student will be charged with developing a suitable algorithm and extend the current post processing work flow with a fast and efficient implementation of the algorithm.

Tasks in the project

Understand the physical interactions that takes place in the data acquisition path from the photons exits the source to the detector signal is registered and to understand the analysis process during post-processing and subsequent 3D reconstruction.

Analyse and register occurrence and severity of ring artefacts for a range of samples and experimental conditions.

Discover methods and algorithms to diminish or eliminate ring artefacts. The task can be extended to make an efficient implementation of the methods in the existing post processing flow.
