Optical tweezers principle and biological applications

We propose a project that covers the basics of holographic optical tweezers, from theory to experiments. We provide guidance for the theoretical understanding of how a holographic optical tweezers platform is constructed and employed for manipulating microstructures. We demonstrate the practical matters of operating the setup, including the alignment of the system and algorithms used for controlling the traps.
Goals of the project:
1) MSc special course:
• Theoretical understanding of the principles behind optical trapping
• Ability to experimentally generate and control single and multiple optical traps on a holographic optical tweezers platform
2) Additional goals for the MSc thesis project:
• Understanding the possible configurations for employing holographic optical tweezers in force spectroscopy applications
• Quantifying the binding forces between model cell membranes and selected molecules

Requirements

Basic knowledge of optics and photonics.
