Stretchable and adhesive sensors for monitoring the wellbeing of the heart

The mapping of electrical signals from the surface of the heart is important for cardiac electrophysiology and to assess complex arrhythmias and evaluate abnormal electrocardiograms. Measuring small signals from the curvilinear and dynamic heart surface is essential to accurately evaluate electrocardiograms in clinical practice. Microelectrode arrays on flexible platforms have the ability to record and map the electrical potential at the surfaces of cardiac tissue. In this project, we will be developing a flexible and adhesive sensor to measure small signals from the heart. This new type of sensor consist of two layers, the top layer act as a stretchable sensor to monitor the physiological movements (expansion and contraction) of the heart tissue and the bottom layer serve as an adhesive with the capacity to attach firmly to the hills and valleys of the heart surface.
