Machine learning as a marine monitoring tool -- developing an algorithm to count and identify marine species from underwater video recordings

Aim:

The aim of this project is to develop a machine learning algorithm based on footage recorded from underwater remote video stations. The footage has been analyzed by trained observers, and the resulting data will be used to build and train an automated video processing model. Specifically, the algorithm will be used to identify common temperate fish to species level and derive an estimate of relative fish abundance (MaxN count) for species of interest.

Background:

The use of underwater remote video stations to monitor marine habitats has drastically increased over the last decade. The technique offers numerous advantages over conventional methods, e.g. by being non-invasive, relatively easy to replicate, and by allowing for relative fish abundance and size estimates. The analysis of video footage by trained observers can, however, be costly and time consuming, with prolonged analyses having the potential to cause fatigue and decrease identification accuracy. It will therefore be highly relevant to develop an automated system capable of performing rapid fish counts and identifications across varying habitat parameters. Ultimately, such a system may offer promising applications in video-based marine monitoring by efficiently deriving fish community metrics from large sample sets.      

Content:

Many hours of underwater recordings were collected during spring and early summer of 2016-2018, from which data will be available for this project. Specifically, videos were recorded from artificial reef sites around Sønderborg bay in South Denmark, as well as from natural stone reefs and soft bottom sand sites. Data obtained from video analyses by trained observers will be used to train the computer model and will serve as a means of comparison on performance and accuracy between both methods. The use of automated processing models for the identification of objects in images is becoming increasingly popular, but most of these models are based on standardized conditions in terms of light, recording angle and position of the object. Developing a model for underwater footage with large variations in visibility, habitat composition and relative positioning of individuals in schools will therefore provide some novel challenges. However, combining the potential for rapid image analysis by an automated system with the collection of large sample sets from underwater video stations will ultimately pave the way for large-scale monitoring of marine habitats around the globe.  

Duration:

The project is available from January 2019. Individual project duration may range between 3 – 12 months, depending on the schedule of the student. Students are welcome to work on the project in a group.
