Optimization of a full-scale anaerobic digestion in Damhussøen wastewater treatment plant

Background

One of the widely used methods for sludge treatment is anaerobic digestion. In this process, a large fraction of the organic matter (cells) is broken down into carbon dioxide and methane in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic digestion is an effective method for resource recovery (energy) and minimization of sludge that needs to be disposed. Optimal operation of the reactor (e.g. high biogas production) can be achieved with the help of mathematical models.

Case study

The digester in the study is located in Damhussøen wastewater treatment plant (Biofos) serving 350000 people. The reactor is under mesophilic conditions receiving mixed sludge, from primary and secondary clarifiers, and fats. The digester will be exposed to dynamic organic loads and its performance will be compared with an identical digester that serves as control.

Aim

·Mathematical modelling of the anaerobic digestion reactor in the case study using the anaerobic digestion model 1

·Design of sampling campaign, sample analysis and data reconciliation

·Calibration and validation of the model predictions against collected data

·Use the validated model to evaluate the performance of the reactor under different scenarios

Approach

The project is a collaboration between DTU Environment, DHI and Biofos (utility managing the WWTPs in Copenhagen area). The student will work with the software WEST (by DHI) for modeling, calibration and process evaluation. The student will collaborate with staff in Biofos on sample collection and analysis from the full-scale digesters (e.g., TS, COD, NH4). The measurements will then be used to calibrate and validate the model using standard protocols. Once the model is validated, scenario simulations will be used to identify optimal operation windows to maximize methane production. Supervision will be equally split between DTU and DHI.
