Quantifying historical city development

Cities in Denmark plan areas for new and redevelopment in municipal plans that are updated every 4th year. As political and societal preferences change over time, the actual city development would clearly be expected to be different from the one foreseen in the plans.
The purpose of this project is to provide quantitative estimates for how much planned and actual developments have differed over time and what impact such differences may have had on the water system.

To identify historical trends, you will perform image classification on historical ortofotos and analyse historical population records. From these, indicators such as % built-up area, % road area or population density can be computed. These can be compared to historical municipal planning documents and (population) projections to answer questions such as:
-Did urban development occur in the foreseen locations?
-Did the degree of urban development match population projections?
-Did development patterns change over time – e.g., was there a change from sprawl to compact development?
-Can we identify effects of, e.g., major infrastructure developments or green areas on densification (sealed area)?

An essential part of the project is to compare actual city developments against historical planning documents. Therefore, you need to be able to read Danish or do the project in a group where at least one of you is able to easily read Danish. Further, you will perform numerous GIS analyses and should thus be comfortable working with GIS software (ArcGIS or QGIS). Finally, you should be prepared to work with rather large amounts of data and extract the relevant information.
