Optimal design of solar heating plants

Denmark is one of the leading countries in district heating. Around 60% of Danish buildings are connected with district heating and district heating covers 50% of total heating demand. The development of Danish district heating targets the transition from current 3rd generation district heating to the future 4th generation low temperature district heating with a large share of renewable energies. By the end of 2008, a total of  54,500 m2 of solar collectors were installed in Denmark, of which 35,000 m2, i.e. 64%, were used in large solar district heating systems. In 2017, the solar collector areas installed in solar district heating plants reached 1.3 million m2, increased by 23 times in nine years. Supplemented by cogeneration technologies for biomass and large scale heat pumps fueled by electricity from wind power, it is possible to achieve a district heating and cooling system with 100% renewable energy. Optimal design of a successful district heating system requires well integration of different renewable energy sources, inclusive solar heat, combined heating and power (CHP), thermal storage, large scale heat pumps etc.

The project/assignment could be focused on one or more the following topics:

Optimal design of a solar heating plant with and without seasonal heat storage

Flexibility option of a district heating system with short term and long term heat storages

Theoretical investigation of thermal performance of solar heating plants

Analysis of long term monitoring data of solar heating plants

Own ideas in the relevant field are also welcome.
