Imagine a future where the world´s protein supply is partly covered by a technology enabling methane to be turned into protein by bacterial fermentation. Unibio is an SME operating in the biotechnology sector with core competences within fermentation technologies. The company owns the rights to a unique fermentation technology – the U-Loop technology – which has been developed in cooperation with DTU and is the result of more than 30 years of research and development activities.

Natural gas (methane) can be converted into a highly concentrated protein product, by fermenting metanotrophic bacteria, which can be used in feed for animals. UniProtein® is produced in a continuous fermentation process. Unibio A/S has a patented U-Loop fermentor with static mixers. The U-Loop fermentor gives a high utilization of the gases, which are carried through the loop by the liquid flow in almost plug-flow mode.

In this project, the student will develop  Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models of one mixer and the whole system in 1-2-3 phase models (Liquid/Gas/Bacteria) which will be used to gain insight into the mixing behavior and bubble size distribution, to optimize the mass transfer and thereby gas utilization and productivity.
