Modelling of micropollutant fluxes across the integrated urban drainagewastewater infrastructures

Micropollutants (MP) represent a challenge to ensure a good ecological status in natural waters and they may also represent a threat to human health when e.g. they enter the food chain (via irrigation) or the drinking water supply infrastructure (via groundwater contamination). Therefore it is important to simulate the fare of different MP across the different compartments, from their sources in urban areas, down drainage systems and treatment plants, and eventually in surface waters, agricultural soil, and groundwater- The project aims at applying simple fate models to simulate the fate of specific MPs (like pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs) in urban catchments. This will first require a preliminary calibration of the model to simulate flows and “traditional” pollutants (TSS, ammonia, COD). The project requires a mix of interdisciplinary skills, since it will combine modelling with understanding of urban drainage systems/wastewater treatment and chemical fate modelling.
