3D printing of batteries

We will explore the possibility of printing a battery or supercapacitor using 3D printing /additive manufacturing techniques. 

3D structuring of the battery electrodes allow more compact and efficient design of solid state batteries. By careful design of the electrode structure it is possible to obtain shorter diffusion paths in the electrode/electrolyte and thereby higher charge/discharge rates. 3D printing could be used for better integration between battery and device, for instance in flexible batteries for wearables or direct co-printing with a device.

The project will include design and print of interdigitated electrode structures and printing of conducting structures. We will use Direct Ink Writing/Robocasting and filament extrusion for printing the electrode patterns.
