Wireless monitoring of the wellbeing of the heart

Measuring electrical signals from the surface of the heart is important for cardiac electrophysiology and to assess complex arrhythmias and evaluate abnormal electrocardiograms. Acquiring small signals from the curvilinear and dynamic heart surface is essential to accurately evaluate electrocardiograms in clinical practice. The standard approach to solving these challenges relies on the use of microelectrode arrays on flexible platforms, that can record and map the electrical potentialat the surfaces of cardiac tissue. 

In contrast to these arrays, this project will focus on developing a flexible and adhesive strain sensor to measure minute strain signals from the heart. This new type of sensor consists of two layers, the top layer acting as a stretchable sensor to monitor the physiological movements (expansion and contraction) of the heart tissue and the bottom layer serving as an adhesive with the capacity to attach firmly to the hills and valleys of the heart surface.  The main focus during this phase of the project is to develop a wireless acquisition and data transmission system, that enables the physician to wirelessly monitor the health status of the beating heart.
