Fate of antibiotic resistant organisms and genes in the urban water system

Water systems have not been designed to cope with emergent contaminants. This is the case for antibiotic resistance, which constitutes a mounting health concern worldwide. The project will address the fate of antibiotic resistant microorganisms and their genes in the context of wastewater reclamation for production of drinking water.

Using literature data, the goal is to predict how much antibiotic resistant organisms and their genes can be removed under various water treatment scenarios. The scenarios will be constructed upon well-known water reclamation cases, e.g. artificial recharge in Northern Europe/Australia and advanced water reclamation in North America. Analysis of the scenarios will highlight the processes and the technologies that contribute the most to mitigating the risks associated with the presence- and the spread- of antibiotic resistance.
