Production and strength testing of unfired clay bricks made from fine-grained Greenlandic glacial sediments

Every year, glacial rivers in Greenland transport and deposit vast quantities of fine-grained rock material. In this project we want to test whether it is possible to produce unfired clay bricks (adobe, CEB) from this material. The project is part of the multi - disciplinary initiative "Greenland Perspective ", which among other things aims to bring the public, the researchers, and the industry together to exploit renewable resources and create business development in Greenland.


Aim

In this project we want to focus on sun-dried clay bricks (adobe) or compressed earth blocks (CEB), which are relatively cheap and simple to produce and which, despite their expected low strength can be used advantageously in many places in the indoor built environment. They could thus prove extremely useful in Greenland, where the majority of the building materials are imported. The glacial sediment that we use in this project comes from the Nuuk area in Greenland. The plan is to produce different types of clay bricks with varying methods, content of cement and fishing net fibers. The different types are produced in order to see the influence of the method, cement and fishing net fibers on the clay brick properties. Furthermore, the addition of fishing net fibers is also expected to have a beneficial effect on the environment when worn and discarded fishing nets can be reused in the form of fiber reinforcement.
