Project aim

To develop a permanent magnet, linear generator proof-of-concept, which can be driven by a free piston engine.


The majority of present day electrical generators are rotary devices. Such generators usually comprise a conventional combustion engine (petrol/diesel) which is used to drive the rotor of a permanent magnet alternator.  However, it has been demonstrated that a free piston engine* driving a linear generator, can achieve greater power densities than a conventional electrical generator of the same generating capacity.

 * an engine whose connecting rod simply moves in a linear, reciprocating manner

About ECC

Engineering Consulting Corporation (ECC) is a minor Engineering Consortium of highly specialized engineers who offer advanced Research and Development (R&D) assistance in the form of test setup, measurements and general consultancy work.

The goal is to assist in the R&D phase with measurements or test configuration in order to reduce the time from idea formation to concept evaluation.

The purpose of the Consortium is to be able to offer competitive prices with a high professional level.

The core competences of the Consortium are structural engineering in form of numerical modelling, composites, material testing, blast/ballistic, 3D printing and prototyping.
