Water quality for shellfish hatchery

Good water quality is a pre-requisite for all shellfish and micro-macro-algae hatcheries. Depending on its use, the water is filtered up to 0.2 µm, e.g. microalgae production or up to 1 µm e.g. for producing oyster larvae. The filtration to such a small pore size is very energy demanding and costly. More, in highly turbid environment where the water is directly pumped from the environment to the hatchery, it would be impossible to achieve high quality of filtration without pre-treatments.

The water pre-treatment includes a setup with both sedimentation tanks and sand filter. This setup allows to remove a very high percentage of fine sediments. The second stage of treatment includes Cartridge and UV filters.

To investigate the efficiency of the water pre-treatment setup, controlled experiments and monitoring will be conducted over a period of 8 months at an established shellfish hatchery. The various existing and innovative treatments will be tested for their efficiency on their own or in series in reducing the turbidity of the water. The particle composition, sedimentation rates and turbidity amongst other parameters will be measured at different points of the treatment circuit in order to determine the optimal setup for seawater treatment before entering the hatchery.
