Overall project description

At the National Food Institute (DTU FOOD) division of Microbiology and Production, group of food microbiology and hygiene  we work with transmission of antimicrobial resistance from production animals to human (the food to fork chain). Today large amounts of antimicrobials are used for production animals which create resistant bacteria. These can be transmitted to the consumer via food and create unwanted antimicrobial resistant bacteria that becomes more and more difficult to treat with antimicrobials

This project

In this project we work with

1)     Phenotypic detection of antimicrobial resistant bacteria using growth dependent techniques and identification of isolated clones

2)     Plasmid characterization using conjugation experiments

3)     gfp  (fluorescence) marked plasmids to identify receivers )(recipients) og plasmids by conjugation in meat

4)     Q-PCR (design, development and verification of primers) for use to quantify specific resistance genes in fecal, meat and skin samples.

5)     Simple bioinformatics that create understanding of relationship between resistance genes ( co- and cross resistance) and plasmids

Your skills

You should have basic knowledge of standard microbiological techniques and some bioinformatics and genetic understanding.
