Seals are found on both shores of the North Atlantic Ocean. A project studying the shape variation of seals across different locations is currently conducted, involving shape measurement of seal crania curated at different locations, among others Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, and the Smithsonian in Washington. Shape capturing technique for this is MicroScribe digitizer-probe, a device for collecting 3D coordinates by tracing an object with a tip of a mechanical pointer arm.

In this project we aim at supplementing the MicorScribe data with the accurate 3D models of the seal crania obtained using the travelling optical scanner, developed at DTU Compute. The scanner has previously been used for scanning human and animal crania. In this project, we will compare the data obtained using MicroScribe and the data obtained using the optical scanner. Furthermore we aim at developing an easy and standardized procedure for using the travelling optical scanner.
