Optimal routes for sailing yachts

This project aims to identify the optimal route for a sailing yacht, aiming to get as quickly from one point to another. The project can focus on small scale routes, i.e. a racecourse, or large scale routes, i.e. an oceanic passage. The route should take into consideration the performance of the yacht on various angles to the wind and in various conditions, and - importantly - how the conditions change in time and space.  

The project uses mathematical methods for dynamic optimization, specifically Dynamic Programming and/or the Maximum Principle. 

The project will typically start with analysis of idealized versions of the problem, for example shortest time paths in shear flow, or in a turning wind field. Depending on the duration of the project, it may end by including real-time weather forecasts. 

Requirements

Experience with mathematical methods for optimization. Probably an interest in sailing.
