Drinking water softening - consequences and potentials for optimization

The Danish water utilities are becoming increasingly interested in central drinking water softening. The Greater Copenhagen utility HOFOR is currently implementing pellet softening and Tårnby Forsyning is currently implementing ion exchange. More utilities are expected to follow during the next years.

 At DTU Environment we are a research group working with drinking water softening and the challenges that arise when implementing this new process. Among the topics we work with are:

-       Effects from central softening in households and in industry (e.g. lime scaling, consumption of detergents and lifespan of appliances)

-       Effects from softening on microbiology in rapid sand filters

-       Optimization of the softening process  (e.g. choice of softening chemical and seeding material)

-       Reuse of by-products from softening (mainly calcium carbonate pellets)

We offer the opportunity for student projects within the fields described above or other topics related to softening, if you have a good idea. Depending on the project topic and focus, it will be possible to do the project in collaboration with HOFOR or another utility company.
