Background:
The wind turbine generators are one of the essential elements of the multi-megawatt wind turbines. Next to the current trend of introducing the direct drive technology to the large offshore turbines, the largest turbine currently on the market, Vestast-168 rated at 9.5MW, is using medium speed generator which is expected to be a favorable topology for wind turbines with 10MW+. 

Project description: 
In this project student will work on the development of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Reluctance Generator   PM SynRel machine wind turbine generator application. The primary goal of the project is to  create the state of the art comparison of the current technologies used in the wind turbine generators (medium speed / direct drive) in terms of efficiency map, torque density and cost where a PM SynRel WTD is the candidate which is evaluated in detail and optimized against performance indicators. Particular attention should be focused on increasing the Annual Energy Production of the WT and hence increasing the partial efficiency of the WTG. The generator should target >96% peak efficiency while air cooled. The design will evaluate the benefits of introduction of liquid cooling. 

Tasks: Depending on the student’s ambitions, the project can consist from following steps
- Literature and market review of SynRel and PM SynRel machine topologies 
- Develop parametrized SynRel 10MW FE model (2D transient),
Evaluation of key performance indicators and partial load losses
- Apply optimization to the motor topology with the focus on high partial load efficiency 
- Quantification of value gains in increased AEP due to efficiency increase
