2 axis HF-magnetometer using MFAM scalar mags and coils




Greater Copenhagen area


·        Build a two axis coil system with current control for cancelling the vertical and horizontal field.

·        Place a scalar magnetometer in both coils and measure the variation of the magnetic field in Z and H-direction.

·        Collect data at 1000 Hz and filter away noise. Use 1 hour data files or similar.

·        Develop program in Python to automatic filter data and plot spectrograms.

·        The HF-mag will be setup and tested at the geomagnetic observatory in Brorfelde.




The geomagnetic field are normally measured at 1 Hz to follow the low frequent changes in the field from daily variations to decades of years. Fluxgate magnetometers are normally used for this. But for other purposes it is interesting to measure at higher frequencies to find Schumann resonances or other fenomenances up to 40 Hz, and we are interested in this.

For this project we have a fast and sensitive double scalar magnetometer (MFAM from Geometrics).
