Cell wall anchored surface proteins of Lactococcus lactis

A class of surface proteins are in Gram-positive bacteria covalently attached to the peptidoglycan layer of the cell wall. These proetins share a LPXTG motif recognized by sortase enzymes and used to attach the protein to the peptidoglycan.
In this project whole genome sequences of isolates of Lactococcus lactis should be analyzed for the occurence of genes potentially coding for such surface proteins by identifying coding sequences with an LPXTG motif as well as an N-terminal secretion signal sequence. Selected potential genes will be cloned on plasmid vectors alloving analysis of phenotypes by expression or inactivation.
