Erosion modelling in gassolid preheating cyclones

ROCKWOOL Group operates several cyclone systems for preheating rock material prior to melting. The cyclones operate under high solid loading and are subject to substantial erosion rates, which limits the lifetime of the cyclones and availability of the production line.

CFD combined with particle modelling is becoming a mature field for erosion prediction in particle laden flows. The project goal is to test this type of modelling for wear prediction in ROCKWOOL preheating cyclones.

The project tasks are as follows:
1) Build a CFD model for a cyclone
2) Test flow and erosion sensitivity to model parameters from literature
3) Compare predicted erosion pattern and magnitude to experimental data
