From nanowood to flexible and recyclable electronics

Most of today’s electronic devices are non-recyclable and thus generate huge amounts of electronic waste, of imminent danger to the environment and the humans residing therein. Recyclable substrates and circuits for electronic devices are therefore called upon to safeguard humanity against a foreboding future consisting of toxic human habitats. Moreover, the future of electronics will be dominated by foldable electronics that will enable the manufacture of bendable mobile phones, foldable ipads and wearable health-care monitors. Flexibility is thus another key property of materials intended for use in tomorrow’s electronic devices.

Naturally occurring polymers present a possible avenue for remedying the fast-approaching environmental disaster, as they are flexible, can be generated in a facile manner and recycled with ease. However, their low barrier properties, mechanical and thermal barrier properties have so far limited their applications in electronics. Nanocellulose - a wood-based polymer - has been highlighted as a naturally occurring and biodegradable polymer with good mechanical properties. However, the thermal and barrier properties of nanocellulose do not match well with the in-organic materials typically used in electronic devices. In this project, the plan is to incorporate nanoreinforcers within nanocellulose to improve its thermal and barrier properties.  We will specifically be using – Laponite - a two-dimensional clay-based nanomaterials know for its ability to improve the mechanical, barrier and thermal properties of polymers. After fine-tuning the properties of the nanoreinforced nanocellulose through tensile, thermogravimetric (TGA), thermomechanical and water permeability testing, we will turn our attention towards a proof-a-concept development of a flexible and recyclable micro-capacitor.
