Exchange of O2 and CO2 between groundwater and the atmosphere

This project aims at investigating oxygen and carbon dioxide fluxes between the atmosphere and groundwater. The project can be performed either in the laboratory or based on numerical modeling. In the laboratory high-resolution flow-through experiments, using innovative sensor technology, will be conducted to quantify the dynamics of O2 and CO2 interchange under transient heat boundary conditions and varying wind speed at porous media surface and to investigate the role of microbial activity on the interchange of O2 and CO2. Alternatively, the focus can be on the development of fully coupled numerical modeling approaches to quantify the dynamics of gas interchange. This master thesis will be within the framework of the DFF-funded project GIGA starting in Fall 2017.


The ideal candidate should be interested in groundwater quality and solute transport in porous media. Previous laboratory or modeling experience is an advantage.
