Meso-scale model sensitivity to Sea Surface Temperature

The Weather Research & Forecast (WRF) model is used at DTU Wind Energy for wind resource assessment.

Sensitivity experiments performed for the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) showed larger errors compared to in situ data when the offshore domain size was larger.

The focus of the proposed project is to use different Sea Surface Temperature (SST) products, of lower to higher spatial resolution, and evaluate the impact on WRF. The project rationale is that for the smaller WRF domain size, the errors associated with less accurate SST will be smaller compared to the larger domain.

The proposed project is relevant for offshore wind energy as validation of meso-scale models is essential prior to the wind resource assessment.

The main project load will be distributed in:
  • literature review regarding observations of sea surface temperature from space, meso-scale modelling and validation studies 
  • learning how to obtain SST data for WRF
  • learning how to obtain and process meso-scale model outputs
  • perform the model inter-comparison, including sensitivity tests on the parameters influencing the results
  • writing of the thesis/report


Requirements

Candidates should have good skills in programming using at least 1 language (Matlab, Octave, Python). Good statistical background will be necessary along with critical thinking and motivation.
