Self-healing and injectable stem cell carriers for tissue engineering applications

Inspired by tissues in the human body, in which damage triggers an autonomic healing response, development and characterization of self-healing hydrogels for tissue engineering applications is gearing up. Hydrogels, have recently found widespread applications in biomedical research due to their soft 3D network structure and tunable physical and chemical properties. They exhibit similar structure to that of the extracellular matrix of many tissues, and can often be processed under relatively mild conditions. The self-healing property provides these amazing biomaterials with the ability to heal on demand within load-bearing tissues in the human body. Moreover, these hydrogels have emerged as promising stem cell carriers that can readily be injected into the body and mold themselves within random tissue defects. The main goal of this project is to design such autonomous self-healing and injectable hydrogels for various tissue engineering applications. Specifically, we will try to recapitulate the electromechanical properties of tissues, such as cardiac and nerve and bone, to enhance the tissue regenerative potential of our self-healable systems. In addition, cell induction ligands, such as growth factors and genes, can be incorporated into these hydrogels, in order to deliver specific signals in an appropriate spatial and temporal manner, for accelerating the mending of tissue disorders.
