Comparative study of RE micro power systems with without wind power

Solar power in combinations with battery systems is now so cheap, simple and robust that they are used for isolated micro-grid solutions, even in developing countries. The cost of the produced electricity is however still costly, and the electricity is therefore used for applications with high value / cost ratios – typically lighting, when the sunlight has disappeared. This implies that a significant part of the power generation during the daytime is stored in the battery, and then used at times with no generation. Adding wind power to the system may result in a better correlation between generation and needs, and less needs for the battery.

The project should compare solar+battery with solar+wind+battery solutions for isolated micro-grid applications under different cost and operation conditions, including investment costs, solar and wind resources, and load patterns. Operation data from a 10 kW solar+battery (+wind) system in Kenya will be made available for a case study.
