Large-scale heat pump systems for district heating

 The Municipality of Copenhagen has proposed an ambitious climate target. The city has to be CO2 neutral in 2025, which also impacts the production of district heating. In order to reach the target, “new” technologies, such as large-scale electrically driven heat pumps (HP), are expected for the production of district heating. 

To obtain experience and knowledge on large-scale HP installations a new demonstration project, named SVAF (Store varmepumper til fjernvarme) was initiated. The project includes installation and long-term operation of two 5 MW HP systems based on three different heat sources: sea and waste water and geothermal heat. The HPs are expected to be in operation by 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Together with Danish Technological Institute, DTU MEK Section of Thermal Energy participates in the SVAF project as a research group. The work includes investigation of several objects in relation to implementation of large-scale heat pumps.

For DTU students studying at the relevant study lines there are several options of master and bachelor projects within this research area. Some topics are listed below, but other ideas are welcome for discussion.

Suggestions for projects:

·       Analysis and comparison of different heat pump configurations including different arrangement of heat exchanger network and integration of oil cooling. This includes further delevopement of a pinch analysis applied to heat pumps.

·       Comparison of different refrigerants (both natural as well as HFOs) for large scale heat pumps, including different compressor technologies.

·       Investigation of optimal unit size for large scale heat pump systems (<10MW) including part load operation and investment cost.

·       Validation of heat pump models based on experimental data from the SVAF heat pumps and investigation of optimal operation conditions and control strategy (available for autumn 2018).

All projects will be carried out in collaboration with relevant SVAF partners (eg. Innoterm, Danish Technological Institute and HOFOR).
