Self-healable Adhesive and Conductive Materials for Motion and Touch Sensor Sensing Applications

Wearable electronics has been advancing rapidly in the past few years due to their applications in electronic skin, monitoring human activities, healthcare, and human–machine-interfacing. These, applications have been made possible by the multifunctional properties of such wearable devices, which include flexibility, stretchability, adhesiveness and self-healing capacity. To this end, stretchable conductors that enable the devices to retain their electrical and mechanical stability under various device deformation scenarios are an essential requirement. For these reasons, studies on stretchable conductors are currently growing fast in both academia and in the industry. However, most of these materials currently lack self-healing ability and adhesiveness.  Additionally, as the devices are going to conform to human tissues, they also need to be biocompatible. In this project we will develop a highly stretchable, adhesive, conductive and biocompatible material for physiological monitoring applications with touch-sensing capacity. Towards this direction, an electrically conductive elastomeric array (E-elastoray) with sensing capacity will be developed through three-dimensional (3D) printing. This device will furthermore be turned into a touch panel by sandwiching a dielectric elastomeric material (separator) between two E-elastorays. Finally, we will also make an attempt to bring this exciting technology into real-world applications by using it to generate a wearable device that enable sophisticated human-machine-interactions through a combination of motion and touch sensitivity.
