Flexible and electrical hydrogels for mending spinal-cord injuries

The Central Nervous System (CNS) is limited in its capacity for self-repair after spinal-cord injury. To this end, the delivery of endogenous stem cells to the target site hold great promise to cure injured nerve tissue. Despite of several reported studies on transplanted neural stem cells, the in vivo differentiation of these cells towards the neural lineage has so far been very inefficient. One avenue to remedy the current “stand-still” in the field of neural tissue engineering, is by encapsulating neural progenitor cells within 3D hydrogel based scaffolds, that can provide a native-like and conductive microenvironment to support neurite extension. However, several issues still have to be addressed to yield hydrogels that are conductive, but yet still sufficiently hydrated to support neural regeneration and repair. To this end, our grand goal is to design and develop electroactive and highly hydrated hydrogels by taking advantage of the amazing swelling properties of pectin-based hydrogels along with the electrical conductivity of graphene-based nanomaterials.
