Re-cycling and up-cycling of bioplastic

Bioplastic is an umbrella term for polymeric plastic materials which have been developed during the last decades as an alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. The defined bioplastic, a plastic material should have at least one of the following characteristics: i) be produced from biomass feedstock; ii) be biologically degradable (i.e. biodegradable); iii) be produced through biological synthesis processes. Production and commercialization of bioplastic has currently a great momentum, as it may contribute to reduce reliance on fossil oil (if biomass-based) or to alleviate some of the environmental problems linked to the uncontrolled release of plastic in the environment (if biodegradable). In this context, the management of bioplastic has raised great interest, especially whether bioplastic could be handled together with other stream of biologically degradable organic materials.

This project will contribute to the development of innovative ideas for the valorization of bioplastic waste. Activities include:

- Analyze and test bioplastic waste for its composition and nutrient/resource content

- Identify suitable microorganisms capable of degrading bioplastic waste under given conditions

- Develop options for biologically extracting building blocks from bioplastics to be used for production of high valuable chemicals and resources
