Enrichment and isolation of microbes from drinking water treatment filters

Rapid sand filters, used as the sole method of drinking water purification from groundwater in Denmark, harbour a large diversity of microorganisms that are involved in the removal of contaminants such as ammonium, manganese, iron methane and sulfide. Many of these organisms belong to taxa that have never been cultivated, or are poorly characterized in pure culture but may have novel capabilities that are as yet unknown. In this project, you will cultivate and/or enrich microorganisms from rapid sand filter material and/or test the resistance of rapid sand filter communities to growth inhibitors such as antibiotics and antiseptics in order to gain a better understanding of the functions and capabilities of the organisms in rapid sand filters. 

Methodologies: Potential methodologies include the operation of bioreactors,  high-throughput cultivation methods with liquid handling robots, diverse traditional microbial cultivation and plating techniques, PCR and qPCR and other molecular and microbiological techniques.
