Resistance of low carbon footprint concrete to carbonation and sulfate attack

According to market forecasts, the construction sector is going to face a critical challenge in near future, because of the doubling of the global demand for cement and concrete between 2010 and 2050. Particularly in Denmark, concrete manufacturing consumes in addition to cement, around 200.000 tons/year of fly ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants. These Danish coal-fired power plants are planned to be phased out within the next decade due to increasing commitments to the CO2 reduction according to the “Paris agreement on climate change”.

Finely ground calcined clays, particularly in combination with finely ground limestone fillers, are among the most promising solutions for a fly ash replacement.

This project family investigates the resistance of concretes made with various composite cements containing calcined clay / limestone / Portland cement towards:
1) sulfate attack at low temperatures and
2) carbonation.
