Measuring and modelling pressure loss characteristics of ROCKWOOL

During production of ROCKWOOL products, process gas is extracted through the newly created primary wool web. The web along with the perforated surface on which it rests, provides a resistance to the flow, which is assumed to vary with the depth of the web layer and the velocity.

The project goal is to measure and model the pressure loss as function of velocity and wool characteristics, for use in future CFD modelling of the process.

The project tasks are as follows:

  1. Conduct field measurements of the primary web depth at a ROCKWOOL production plant.
  2. Measure the pressure loss of web samples as function of depth and flow velocity.
  3. Develop a correlation for the pressure loss as function of dependent variables.
  4. Test implemented correlation in a CFD model against measured global pressure loss.
