Background:

Fresh water is one of the main natural resources used excessively by manufacturing industries. To minimize the fresh water uptake, industries can recycle and reuse water in different processes. Moreover, industries can benefit from symbiosis relations with neighboring industries and exchange used water. To do so, industries require meeting a certain water quality for use in different processes (e.g. process, washing, cooling, etc.). Therefore, to recycle and reuse wastewater from different industries use, decentralized fit-for-purpose treatment units are considered.

Project description:

This special course is part of the Gecko project (Green and circular innovation for Kenyan companies). Gecko is a Danida-funded pilot research project (2018-2020) and aims at providing scientific knowledge base for developing a national strategy for designing and projecting high-circular eco-industrial parks in Kenya. An existing industrial site in Nairobi, Kenya is chosen as case study.

The main purpose of this special course is to identify and evaluate wastewater treatment technologies used to remove particular pollutants or categories of pollutants in wastewater stream from various industries.   

The main tasks of this special course are as following:

-  Performing literature study on best available industrial wastewater treatment technologies for internal or external reuse

- Developing/identifying cost functions for selected wastewater treatment technologies in practice
